Jesús

Barrio Jesús is one of the key districts of the canton of Atenas, the second one. Its history is closely connected to the development of the canton and to the historic coffee transportation route to the Pacific.

History

The history of Barrio Jesús dates back to the era of oxcart drivers (boyeros) and the transportation of goods by oxcart. Originally, the area was known as “La Boca.” It served as a strategic rest stop (“sesteo”) for oxcart drivers traveling between the Central Valley and Puntarenas. In this sector there was a resting place known as “La Casa de la Nación,” an important landmark for commerce at the time. Over the years, the settlement grew around these transportation and agricultural activities, eventually becoming the district of Jesús.
