Mercedes is the third district of the canton of Atenas, in the province of Alajuela, Costa Rica.
History
The development of Mercedes is connected to the agricultural expansion of Atenas during the 19th century, when farming families settled in the area, taking advantage of its fertile lands and favorable climate. Over time, the community grew around agricultural activities and local commerce, maintaining a peaceful and traditional character that still defines the district today.

- Mercedes Centro: Refers to the main hub where the district center is located, at an elevation of approximately 720 meters above sea level.
- Cajón: The formally recognized neighborhood within the district. This sector also includes the subsection known as Barrio Fátima.
- Plancillo: A community located in the higher areas, bordering or shared with neighboring districts such as San Isidro.
- El Bosque: A residential and commercial sector known for developments such as El Bosque Centro Plaza and nearby residential areas along the main road.

- TRIP Helados y Café: One of the most visited spots in the district, strategically located in El Bosque Centro Plaza, next to the sports field. It specializes in artisanal signature ice cream (Karmelú brand), specialty coffee, and a diverse menu of brunch and handcrafted pastries.
