Santa Eulalia

Santa Eulalia is considered the historic district of Atenas, recognized for being the territory with the oldest official recognition in the entire province of Alajuela.

Origins and Hacienda Santa Eulalia

The history of the district is closely linked to the former Hacienda Santa Eulalia, a large estate of approximately 2,250 hectares that once extended from San Mateo to the areas near Rosario de Naranjo. The district holds a Royal Title dating back to the late 16th century, granted during the Spanish colonial period, making it the oldest officially recognized settlement in the region, even predating the independence of Costa Rica.

Birthplace of Community Development

Santa Eulalia holds an important place in Costa Rica’s social history thanks to its strong community spirit.
  • First ADI in Costa Rica: In 1968, a group of visionary residents founded the country’s first Asociación de Desarrollo Integral (ADI) in Santa Eulalia.
  • Community Achievements: Through this association, the district achieved important milestones, including the construction of its church, community hall, and the first technical high school in the canton.

Current Characteristics

  • Economy: The district remains largely rural, with agriculture being the main activity among medium-scale farmers.
  • Identity: In recent years, efforts have been made to declare the district an area of cultural, historical, and tourist interest in order to preserve its heritage.

Main Towns and Sectors

  • Santa Eulalia Centro: The heart of the district. This is where most of the social activity takes place and where the church, sports field, community hall, and the well-known Restaurante Olaya are located.
  • Bajo Los López: A traditional sector located at a lower elevation than the town center. It is a close-knit community with strong agricultural roots.
  • Vainilla: A key connector with San José de Atenas. It is well known among local drivers and cyclists for its steep incline, La Cuesta de Vainilla.
  • Rincón Rodríguez: An area of farms and local services. It is home to small businesses and service points that help diversify the district’s economy beyond traditional agriculture.

Places of Interest

  • Restaurante Olaya: A community project operated by the development association that pays tribute to the historic hacienda, offering traditional Costa Rican cuisine while helping fund local community initiatives.
