San José is the sixth district of the canton of Atenas. It is a region that balances its traditional coffee-growing rootswith a modern, high-end residential appeal, often considered one of the most scenic areas of the canton.
History
Historically, San José played an important role in the expansion of coffee production during the 19th and 20th centuries. The landscape is still dotted with coffee plantations that define its identity. In recent decades, the district has evolved from a purely rural agricultural area into a desirable location for country homes (quintas) and luxury mountain residences, attracting both local families and a growing international community.
Description and Characteristics

- Dual Access: San José has the advantage of being close to downtown Atenas for essential services while also offering quick access to Route 27 and internal roads leading to Palmares and San Ramón, making it convenient for frequent travelers.

- San José Sur: This sector acts as the main gateway to the district from downtown Atenas. It is slightly more commercial and serves as a transition area between the urban center and the rural hills.
- La Puebla: Located on the outskirts of the center, this sector has experienced notable growth. It is characterized by hilly terrain with excellent views, as well as a mix of traditional family homes and newer residential developments.
